The W. P. Hickman Co., Asheville, N.C., announced the release of a new product that is an engineered metal replacement system for roof nailers. The EdgeBox Perimeter Metal Blocking System is a two-piece slotted design that replaces traditional wood blocking or nailers at the perimeter of a low-slope roof and can be used with a wide range of roofing and insulation systems. EdgeBox attaches to the roof deck and is used in conjunction with Hickman fascia profiles that have been tested to meet the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 roof edge standard, now required by the International Building Code. The rigid box-shaped profile acts as a retainer for lightweight concrete or rigid insulation. The system is available in two different variations, with or without a cant to accommodate different commercial roofing systems. The elimination of wood nailers prevents rotting, insect damage, mold, and fastener corrosion in ACQ treated wood. The removal of wood also provides improved attachment of fascia to edge for better fastener pull-out and stronger attachment to the decking or structure so pull through is less likely. The metal box profile also expands and contracts at the same rate as the structural steel and steel deck and provides improved alignment that is straight and flush with the building façade. “We engineered the system to address other considerations beyond just removing the wood from the roof. Rapid installation is a priority to our clients,” noted Adam Demchak, Hickman Design Engineer. “Our slotted box design allows for rapid fill of lightweight concrete while eliminating the thermal gap at the roof’s edge. We also incorporated pre-punched holes and self-drilling fasteners to expedite proper installation.” For more information on W.P.
