The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) added Milne Center for Ocean Science and Conservation to its library of downloadable publications. The 20-page folio explores the design and construction of a metal building that is integral to Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Conn.

Tony Bouquot, general manager at MBMA, says, “This is the 10th release in the Architectural Significance in Metal Buildings series, which was created for architectural faculty and students to learn about metal building systems and their extraordinary possibilities. Each publication analyzes the design goals, priorities, and outcomes for that facility. The newest folio delves into the objectives, design, and construction of this incredible oceanic education and research center.”

MBMA created the Milne Center for Ocean Science and Conservation folio in coordination with Capital Studio Architects LLC, based in East Hartford, Conn., Carlin Construction Co. LLC, based in New London, Conn., and Mystic Aquarium. It includes:

  • Interviews with David Holmes, architect at Capital Studio, Keith Sorensen, of Mystic Aquarium, and members of the construction team.
  • Project design insights for the 1,672 m2 (18,000 sf) metal building that features an education center for students and an open, flexible space for animal care and research.
  • Objectives and goals for the project including preventing leaks, increasing roof life, enhancing energy efficiency, improving aesthetics, and engineering for transporting heavy loads.
  • Photos, drawings, and graphics that illustrate phases/elements of the design and construction process.
