The repurposing of an iconic grand belle railway station in Detroit stands among the 10 projects recognized with a North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) award by the Copper Development Association (CDA). The NACIA awards showcase outstanding work in design, fabrication, and craftsmanship using architectural copper.
“Copper’s resilience, adaptability, and aesthetic qualities make it a fantastic choice for roofs, façades, and other building elements,” says Larry Peters, project manager at CDA. “We applaud the expertise of this year’s winning teams.”
NACIA judges consider factors such as the integration of copper into the building, design quality, and installation craftsmanship. The panel selected outstanding examples in the new construction and historic restoration categories.
The judges selected five new construction projects:
• Madrone Ridge residence, Sonoma County, Calif.
• Australian Embassy, Washington, D.C.
• The Ledger mixed-use building, Bentonville, Ark.
• CopperDrifts residence, Provincetown, Mass.
• Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Campus, Park Synagogue, Pepper Pike, Ohio.
CDA also recognized five winners in the restoration category:
• Courtyard, New York State Capitol, Albany, N.Y.
• Michigan Central Station, Detroit.
• Logan County Courthouse, Lincoln, Ill.
• Green County Courthouse, Monroe, Wisc.
• Phase one, East Block, Canadian Parliament, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
