Roof Underlayments - December 2018

Roof underlayments featured in Metal Construction News' December 2018 issue.

Atlas Roofing’s FR-10 and FR-50 Slipsheets enhance overall fire performance of many roof systems including metal roofs. They protect against flame spread and flame penetration through the roof system. FR-10 and FR-50 are coated-glass fiber mats designed for installation over wood decks or polystyrene insulation. FR-50 incorporates a heavier glass mat than FR-10 to provide enhanced fire performance. The slipsheets can also act as barriers between chemically incompatible insulation and roof membranes. Slipsheets can be installed with multiple layers to attain Class A fire resistance ratings.

Boral Roofing’s MetalSeal is a high-temperature, self-adhered underlayment. It is designed for metal roofing and is also suitable for any roof material in any climate. The waterproofing material provides all-season, durable protection by bonding to the base sheet or directly to the roof deck, and self-sealing around fastener penetrations. MetalSeal provides a high-strength, woven polyester surface, meets or exceeds all national and Florida building code requirements, and is rated to 260 F. It comes in 216-square-foot rolls for a net two squares.

Carlisle WIP Products’ WIP 300HT is a high-tensile strength, self-adhering, rubberized asphalt underlayment. It works with multiple metal roofing materials including copper, zinc and Corten. It may also be used under synthetic, concrete and clay tiles, and asphalt shingles. WIP 300HT roof underlayment provides protection from water penetration caused by wind-driven rain and ice dams, and is designed to withstand temperatures up to 250 F (121 C). The strong, skid-resistant membrane is available in black or white.

Englert’s Metalman HT-40 underlayment is a 40-mil, self-adhesive waterproofing membrane composed of SBS-modified bitumen and an UV, anti-slip, polyethylene-woven top facer. The roof underlayment’s release film backing is UV resistant, and protects it from degradation when exposed to the elements for less than 90 days prior to roofing material installation. Metalman HT-40 meets Florida Building Code FL 11351.1 and Miami-Dade Product Control Approved NOA #08-225.10.

IMETCO’s AquaBlock roof underlayment is a self-adhering, SBS-modified membrane for metal roof panels, metal shingles and metal tiles. The self-sealing roof underlayment has a silicone-treated, split-back release film for installation, and can be installed directly to concrete, plywood, wood composition board and gypsum. AquaBlock is designed to protect against water infiltration due to ice and snow accumulation at penetrations, valleys and edges on sloped roofs.

McElroy Metal’s HydraShell MAX and HydraShell Supreme SA are synthetic underlayments. HydraShell MAX has a four-layer construction and is used under all types of finished roofing materials including steel roofing. It is suitable for roof pitches as low as 1/2:12. HydraShell MAX requires few fasteners and provides a durable deck cover. HydraShell Supreme SA is a peel-and-stick underlayment. It works in high-temperature, self-adhering applications. It has SBS-modified asphalt that provides pliability and a cool gray surface that reduces heat build-up.

MFM Building Products’ Wind and Water Seal underlayment is high temperature rated to 250 F. It works well under metal roofing systems, and is self-adhering and self-sealing around fasteners. The 40-mil-thick roof underlayment may be used as a whole roof covering to offer secondary water protection. Rolls are 36 inches by 67 feet (200 square feet).
