A glass windscreen lines the rooftop at AC Hotel by Marriot Portsmouth. It functions as a protective guardrail with unobstructed views. Patrons at a rooftop restaurant with outdoor seating for 96 people are afforded panoramic views of the Piscataqua River and bridges.

A 54-inch guardrail met wind load requirements and optimized sightlines. Granite State Glass installed 270 feet of Trex Commercial Products’ Ascent Glass Windscreen with 9/16-inch-thick, clear laminated glass with SentryGlas Plus (SGP) interlayer, supplied by Cardinal Glass Industries Inc. The glass panels have steel stanchions that were welded on-site to structural steel members.

Additionally, Classic Exterior LLC installed Fairview Architectural North America’s Vitrabond MCM at an accent band at the second floor, on the façade from the second floor to the roof, and at the roof and wall accent banding. MCM also frames a pair of windows to create depth and shadow. The 4-mm thick MCM has a fire resistant (FR) core. Four colors were used: Black, Faux Zinc Light, Faux Zinc Charcoal and CMX Champagne Metallic.

The city’s Historic District Commission does not allow air intake or exhaust louvers to be visible from the exterior. Corrugated metal panel were installed between windows with offset mounting that allowed designers to conceal intake louvers to each hotel room’s HVAC unit.

Between windows, Classic Exterior installed CENTRIA’s CS-660 corrugated metal panels in Gun Barrell and Rich Black to conceal air intake louvers, which are held off the wall 2 inches to allow proper air flow to the louvers. Corrugated metal was also installed at the roof top bar.

The five-story AC Hotel has 156 guest rooms, a ground-level lounge with two-sided fireplace, and kitchen.
