Academic Building, New College of Florida, Sarasota, Fla.

The building combines 36,000 square feet of offices, classrooms, common and support spaces. The design combines vernacular and contemporary design elements, consistent with its location on the Gulf of Mexico. It features a PAC-CLAD metal roof from Petersen Aluminum Corp., masonry walls and hurricane shutters for protection from sun and rain. The PAC-CLAD material includes 20,000 square feet of 0.040-inch aluminum Tite-Loc Plus panels, as well as 4,400 square feet of 0.032-aluminum PAC-850 soffit panels. Petersen also supplied 7,000 square feet of PAC Flat Stock for flashings. Multiple sustainable strategies include externalized circulation, deeply shaded south- and west-facing arcades, natural light and ventilation, and a rainwater collection system.

The building’s open and receptive south and west sides face the existing library on a new shared plaza and green. The design helps establish the college’s evolving architectural character, which is shaped by academic tradition and the requirements of a tropical climate.
