The memorial building celebrated its grand opening in April 2008 after an $11 million renovation and expansion, which was jointly funded by Atlantic City and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.
A playground addition required a secure perimeter fence that was visually open yet strong and durable. OGi Architectural MetalSolutions, a division of Ohio Gratings Inc., provided the galvanized and powder coated PressLock Steel Fencing for the memorial. The PressLock Urban steel fence configuration was used and installed between brick piers and as single and double swing gates with ornamental fabrication. The PressLock Urban fence material was also used as a trellis system for shade above several areas of the park.
OGi manufactured and fabricated the fence materials, in addition to providing fence posts, gates and hardware. The fence panels are 5 1/2 feet (1.7 m) high and 4 1/6 feet (1.3 m) wide, with a 2 3/16- by 5 1/4-foot (0.6- by 1.6-m) mesh opening. The in-line fence posts are 2- by 1/2-inch (51- by 13-mm) steel flat bar galvanized with a powder coating to match the fence. The posts are core-drilled and embedded at 18 inches (457 mm), and the gate assemblies have a 2- by 2-inch HSS welded steel tube miter cut. The gate posts are 4- by 4-inch (102- by 102-mm) HSS steel tubes embedded 24 inches (610 mm) in concrete. All fence material used the PressLock fence mounting system with a welded mounting bar at the top and bottom. The bar had extended formedarms that met the posts and an aligned, slotted hole to aid installation. The material has withstood the rigors of an inner-city playground while allowing for a safe and secure outdoor area for the community’s youth.
