Benton Harbor Water Treatment Plant, Benton Harbor, Mich.

After more than 60 years in operation, the plant had begun to experience failures and was in need of an upgrade. In fact, improvements were mandated by the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act. Renovations were designed to preserve the Art Deco aspects of the former plant while adding a contemporary touch. The plant features 8,060 square feet of ATAS International Inc.'s 24-gauge Rigid Wall metal wall panels in Silversmith. Other upgrades included repairing the roof, lintels, entryways, foundation, doors, windows, lighting, exterior brick and glass block corners, as well as adding new handrails, stairwells and restrooms. A new control room and testing laboratory upgrades-along with repaired filters, new plate settlers and pump advancements-improve the plant's efficiency and the water quality. The new plant opened on July 20, 2011.
