Chemeketa Community College’s Building 20, Salem, Ore.

Carlson Veit Architects PC designed the exterior of Chemeketa Community College’s Building 20 with metal wall panels to reflect its technologically driven use. Building 20 houses the college’s machining, drafting and engineering departments, and offices for other Applied Technology Department staff. The north side of the building contains a large, open shop; the south side is a two-story classroom wing with adjacent offices. The 50,000-square-foot building was designed to LEED Gold guidelines and completed in October 2016.

Angela Flores, architect at Carlson Veit Architects, says, “Metal exterior cladding was decided on early in the design process. Due to the industrial nature of the building, the decision was made to go with an all metal exterior cladding and to use different types of metal cladding to articulate the exterior.”

Smith Sheet Metal Inc. installed 8,858 square feet of Dri-Design’s 0.08-inch aluminum wall panels in post-painted Silversmith and pre-painted Inspire Series Rusted Bronze.

Mack Landreth, estimator and project manager at Smith Sheet Metal, says, “This project required reveal joints to align with many structural steel locations at soffit locations, transferring to mullions on the vertical plane.”
