CubeSmart, Cranston, R.I.

Insulated metal panels (IMPs) are an integral building product for the CubeSmart self storage facility. They clad both of the facility’s buildings and match CubeSmart’s brand colors.

Ed McKean, owner at EKM Construction Inc., IMP installer for the project, says, “Lately, people are doing whatever they can to avoid having a big, plain-Jane gray building. Staggering the colors in a random pattern is one way of doing just that; that seems to be a new trend. It’s not hard, but you have to pay attention when you’re installing the panels.”

For the three-story, climate-controlled main building, Lacuna Design Inc. specified 4-inch-thick IMPs. For the one-story, unconditioned ancillary storage building, the architecture firm specified 2-inch-thick IMPs.

For the main building, EKM Construction installed 24,000 square feet of Green Span Profiles LP’s WaveLine IMPs in Ash Gray and 5,000 square feet in custom CubeSmart Red. On the one-story building, EKM Construction installed 5,000 square feet of IMPs in Ash Gray and 5,000 square feet of IMPs in custom CubeSmart Red. The IMPs are 42 inches wide, and have 24-gauge exterior metal and 26-gauge interior metal in Regal White. To complete the installation, McElroy Metal supplied framing in custom CubeSmart Red, trims and other IMP accessories. On top of the main building, GCL System Integration Technology Co. Ltd.’s GCL-P6/72H 330 multi-crystalline photovoltaic modules were installed.
