The Fannie Emanuel Apartments building features insulated metal panels (IMPs) in blue and light gray. For the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) project, Greg Marinelli, associate principal at Holabird and Root LLC, says, “The panel system not only gave us the opportunity to change the look of the building, but to have a continuously insulated façade.”
The project was a renovation of an existing apartment building. Matt Mosher, deputy chief of capital construction at CHA, says, “[The metal panels are] essentially creating an insulated rainscreen. If water gets behind the system, it’s designed to go between the panel and DensGlass (from Georgia- Pacific Gypsum LLC) behind it and wick its way out. We think [the panels] provide an add for the R-value.”
To complete the 124,420-square-foot project, Crown Corr Inc. installed two types of CENTRIA’s IMPs: Formawall Dimension Series 3-inch-T and Formawall Graphix 3-inch-thick IMPs. The 20/26 gauge panels are Chromium Grey with an embossed finish and Blue Zinc substrate in smooth finish.
