Field Maintenance Shop Phase I, Florence, S.C.

In 2012, the South Carolina National Guard combined and relocated three existing maintenance units into one new location in Florence, S.C. A vacant field was transformed into a cutting-edge maintenance facility campus, which is home to a 13,800-squarefoot field maintenance shop, wash building, diesel fueling station and loading dock. The facilities provide maintenance services for vehicles including Humvees (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle), HEMTTs (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) and construction equipment.

The maintenance building and other campus components are designed to accommodate the anticipated growth over the next 20 years. With longevity in mind, metal wall panels were selected as the predominant cladding material to address maintenance and durability concerns. The metal wall panels also play a key role in meeting the sustainability requirements for recycled content. Other sustainable aspects of this project include a geothermal heat pump system for the HVAC system, daylight in all occupied spaces, and on-site storm water detention. The industrial nature of the shop, as well as the rugged vehicles being serviced, provided inspiration for the building design. Metal ribbed panels and ground-faced block veneer combine to provide a tough exterior cladding system that will withstand the abuse and wear that maintenance shops are subjected to.

McElroy Metal's Mega Rib metal panels serve as the primary wall cladding system for the exterior of the building. McElroy Mini Rib metal panels are used for the exterior soffit material and as accent wall cladding at the main entrance. Up-lighting at the main entry canopy highlights the McElroy Mini Rib and Mega Rib metal panels above the entrance. Custom square metal escutcheon plates were designed and fabricated for the recessed down lights to provide a clean and weathertight trim detail at the Mini Rib metal soffit panels. Attachment of the metal panel system was also considered with regards to exterior appearance. All exposed fasteners are aligned both horizontally and vertically to maximize visual uniformity.
