Studio Ma Inc. specified several colors of insulated metal panels (IMPs) for the exterior of Fusion on First, a student residential and academic building at Arizona State University. The faces of the IMPs are lightly profiled with narrow, longitudinal striations, which create a slight shadow effect. Furthermore, slab edge reveals and the windows are designed to add visual interest to the tall building’s façades.
Pat Brackney, director of preconstruction at True Metal Solutions LLC (TMS), which installed the IMPs, says, “The design team chose to use staggered, noncontinuous reveals at the slab edges and different sizes of vertical panels, creating a unique, interesting and pleasing architectural design.”
Kellen Johnson, sales representative at Metl-Span, says, “Since Metl- Span didn’t have a standard slab-edge detail for this exact configuration, our team, which included engineering experts, worked with TMS and the design team to find the perfect solution for integrating the Metl-Span panels into the weathertightness at the slab edges at every level, something we had never really seen before.”
TMS installed Metl-Span’s 3-inch-thick, 42-inch-wide CF Striated IMPs in four colors: Copper Metallic, custom Finest Silk, custom Roman Brick and custom Industrial Age.
The first three floors of the 283,000-square-foot building house an innovation hub for the arts and academic programs including design, music and fashion. The fourth through 17th floors have residential spaces.
