Daylighting via polycarbonate glazing is a prominent feature on Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd.’s (HAECO Americas) hangar at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) Airport. The 250,000-square-foot hangar can house eight narrow-body aircraft, or two wide-body aircraft and two narrow-body aircraft. In addition to its aircraft maintenance hangar, the facility also has mechanical and electrical systems, fire protection equipment rooms, retail shops and administrative offices. It is the fifth hangar the maintenance and repair company operates at PTI Airport.
The polycarbonate glazing makes up part of the building envelope’s upper portion as clerestory sections, at its corners and on three massive doors. To complete the project, Exterior Technologies Inc. (EXTECH) fabricated and installed 26,600 square feet of its LIGHTWALL 3440 system. Opal-colored structural, 40-mm cellular polycarbonate glazing panels are supported with aluminum framing. Installation took five weeks.
