As part of an extensive renovation and addition project at Helena Aviation Readiness Center, the facility more than doubled in size from one building housing 40,000 square feet to seven buildings with 100,000 square feet. On the exteriors of the main building and maintenance garage, SMA Architects PC specified brick veneer and metal wall panels in two colors: Statuary Bronze and Spanish Red.
Tim Meldrum, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, principal/owner at SMA Architects, says, “The color selection was driven by the colors of the existing buildings, hangars on-site. Ultimately, Citadel was chosen for its look and value.”
Swank Enterprises Inc. installed Citadel Architectural Products’ Envelope 2000 Deep-Reveal metal composite material (MCM) panel attachment system. Swank installed 8,230 square feet of MCM in Statuary Bronze and 7,660 square feet in Spanish Red. An additional 2,575 square feet of MCM in Statuary Bronze was installed on the maintenance garage. The project is LEED Gold certified.
“The [main] building has two different roofing systems with many different lines,” Meldrum says. “In general, the panels are located above the veneer and scattered about the main building. In most cases, we worked above the many different roof elevations which created some challenges during install.”
