Hudson Yards mixed-use development, New York City

PPG Industries Inc. supplied coatings for three of the six skyscrapers that make up the Hudson Yards mixed-use development on the west side of Manhattan. The coatings were used on the exteriors and interiors of 15 Hudson Yards, 35 Hudson Yards and 55 Hudson Yards.

A series of straps that appear to buckle up the façade before morphing into a quadra-leaf shape on the upper floors of the 70-story 15 Hudson Yards, which led to its nickname, Corset Tower. For the first tower in the development, Diller, Scofidio + Renfro specified, and Keymark Corp. applied, two custom colors.

For aluminum curtainwall framing on the 92-story 35 Hudson Yards, Skidmore Owings and Merrill specified PPG’s 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin Duranar coating in custom Champagne Bronze. For an interior façade, Keymark applied PPG’s Duracron coating in custom White Pearl.

For the interior of 35 Hudson Yards’ podium, Skidmore Owings and Merrill designed aluminum extrusion terrace handrails and balustrades, which Keymark finished in PPG’s Duracron coating in White.

For curtainwall framing and window frames on the 51-story 55 Hudson Yards, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates specified smooth and textured powder coatings that mimic cast iron façades of the nearby SoHo neighborhood. The black coatings also refer to the industrial heritage of the building’s site in the historic Meatpacking District. Spectrum Metal Finishing Inc. factory-applied PPG’s Coraflon powder coatings in Black Flower.
