Construction on the 108,000-square-foot (10,033-m2), five-story medical building began in fall 2007 and was completed in fall 2009. Located in a prominent position within the 40-acre (16-hectare) medical center campus, the objective was to make the office building a landmark building. Visible from two major arterials and located adjacent to the existing Regional Hospital, the office building is a proactive response to addressing the health care needs of the community.
Designed to be complementary to the architectural expression of recent hospital expansions, the new building incorporates unique features designed to set it apart from other structures by the introduction of new materials and a divergence of traditional campus shapes. The exterior of the ground floor is clad in granite, while the second through fifth floors are clad in approximately 26,000 square feet
(2,415 m2) of prefinished metal panels from Alcoa Architectural Products, along with ribbon windows. Alcoa supplied its 0.16-inch
(4-mm) Reynobond Composite Panels with a Kynar finish in Bone White, Cadet Gray and Floating Garden Green, a custom color by Valspar Industrial Coatings.
The southerly most corner of the building facing the hospital is cantilevered and slanted out past the primary plane of the building, creating a truly unique and powerful feature, which is accentuated with slanted fin walls. Recessed, punched windows further allow for the dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the building façade. Primary entrance canopies are accented by a rhythm of slanted columns and round caps providing a welcoming shade to visitors, patients and staff with a curved wall above in accented color for further emphasis and to help break up the 200-foot (61-m) lengths.
