Several applications of metal panels were used in the construction of a new Nemours Sussex medical office building. Insulated metal panels (IMPs), metal composite material (MCM) panels and corrugated metal wall panels were used for the three-story, 90,000-square-foot building. The facility is at the Bayhealth Sussex Campus adjacent to Bayhealth Hospital and Bayhealth Outpatient Center.
The panel system transitions seamlessly over multiple substrates including studs, CMU and hat track. At the upper floors, a window system integrated with IMPs creates a flush look. Entry areas are clad with a combination of MCM and phenolic panel rainscreens.
Importantly, to build angular wall shapes and complex convergences of different cladding systems, 3-D scans were conducted on substrates to ensure accuracy of fabricated components. Dylan Seyler, vice president at S&S Structures Inc., says, “Formed corner panels further cleaned up the lines of the building by eliminating the need for corner trims. Extruded aluminum trims rounded out the IMP package.”
For the majority of the building envelope, S&S installed 21,000 square feet of Metl-Span’s CF Architectural IMPs. The 24-inch-wide IMPs have a flat, un-embossed profile and PVDF finish in Tundra and Tahoe Blue. Color-matched vertical gaskets Metl-Vision window system with flush frames were used as well.
With River Supply Inc.’s RS-175 rainscreen attachment system, S&S installed 3,400 square feet of 3A Composites USA Inc.’s 4-mm-thick ALUCOBOND MCM panels in a Clear Adonic finish at three entrance canopies and three-story architectural eyebrow over elevator lobbies. For a rooftop equipment screen, S&S also installed 1,000 square feet of ATAS International Inc.’s Belvedere 7.2-inch Rib metal wall panels.
