As part of an expansion project at Pechanga Resort Casino that almost doubled the size of the lobby and registration area, Klai Juba Wald Architecture and Interiors designed a new glass atrium that streams daylight into the lobby and a metal ceiling system with a geometric pattern.
The ceiling is comprised of more than 100 triangular-shaped pods, each pod with about 20 panels. The metal panels are perforated and backed with black acoustical fleece to absorb noise. Additionally, more than 300 custom perimeter trims were used. The pods are at various slopes on the 30-foot ceiling and separated by 9-inch gaps, creating a fractured, geometric appearance.
Ann Fleming, principal at Klai Juba Wald Architecture and Interiors, says, “By creating that fractured look with different shapes at different heights, we were able to break the expansive ceiling, allow some light play, and make it more organic in feel than a straight, flat ceiling.”
