A 60,000-square-foot addition and renovation to Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre in Salt Lake City was designed to be a unified expression that respects the original Capitol Theatre’s history and creates a timeless companion. The new building edifice takes cues from Capitol Theatre. It relates to the scale, proportion and color palette of the original building. The three-part elevation of the Capitol Theatre’s base, mid-section and crown is seen in the new building. The lobby walls mimic in orthogonal steel and glass the two-story arched stone arcade of the Capitol Theatre. The brick pattern is reinterpreted in the diagonal metal panel rainscreen system with color-changing LED backlighting. Capitol Theatre’s distinct cornice is reinterpreted as a back-lit glass railing system to illuminate the top edge of the new building. The two buildings are separated by a narrow glass atrium. The void was intended to set the buildings apart and bridge the gap between them. The project utilized 4,500 square feet of aluminum rainscreen panels supplied by Pohl Inc. of America. Pohl provided 4-mm aluminum wall panels painted with Valspar Corp.’s Fluropon Classic II Champagne Bronze, corrugated panels painted with Valspar’s Fluropon Classic II Silversmith, and 3-mm stainless steel column casing with a Brushed Orbital Finish. The $35 million project was completed in November 2014. It included a main lobby expansion, theater restoration, improved circulation, Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, expanded restrooms, three rehearsal studios, administrative suite, and a hosting venue that can serve more than 100 guests with access to an outdoor rooftop terrace.
