The Rockaway Hotel, Queens, N.Y.

When designing The Rockaway Hotel, Morris Adjmi Architects took some cues from local neighborhood homes, which have vertically joined and horizontally lapped siding.

An upper portion of the six-story hotel is clad with vertical, graphite grey zinc panels. At the hotel’s lower, larger building portion, there are horizontally oriented, blue grey zinc panels.

RHEINZINK America Inc. supplied two colors of its prePATINA zinc: graphite grey and blue grey. B&B Sheet Metal Inc. fabricated the panels and Adamex Construction Inc. installed them.

Tom Hessler, technical director at B&B Sheet Metal, says, “[The owner] liked the color and texture of RHEINZINK’s material: its compatibility in saltwater and ocean environments, and its long lifespan.”

For the horizontal lapped look at the lower building portion, using 8-inch-wide panels, Adamex Construction installed 13,600 square feet of prePATINA blue-grey zinc.

To create the continuous, corrugated effect, with vertical panels on the upper building portion, Adamex Construction installed 7,000 square feet of prePATINA graphite grey zinc. The 1-mm-thick panels are 12 inches wide and have 1-inch-high ridges.

Matching RHEINZINK materials also were used to wrap corner posts outside, metal coping in a pool area and reveals around windows.

Mike Dell’Olio, regional sales manager in New York at RHEINZINK America, says, “Throughout the hotel’s life span, the zinc wall cladding’s dynamic exterior appearance will evolve as formed by the Rockaways’ unique local, coastal climate.”
