A combination of a metal building system, lean-to building, metal roofing, and metal walls met project goals for Shoals Economic Development Authority’s (SEDA) aviation hangar at Northwest Alabama Regional Airport.
The 15-m (50-ft) tall, 46-m (150-ft) by 46-m (150-ft) hangar can accommodate a 40-m (130-ft) long aircraft with a 34-m (113-ft) wingspan. A 13-m (43-ft) tall, 37-m (120-ft) wide, six-leaf, powered hangar door was installed to access the building.
Additionally, to house office and support spaces, a 5-m (16-ft) tall, 15-m (50-ft) wide by 30-m (100-ft) long, 465-m2 (5,000-sf) lean-to building was built with the hangar. It was designed to accommodate future expansion.
Notably, the hangar portion of the building houses a wet and clean agent fire suppression system, a chemical extinguishment system to extinguish fires without water or corrosive chemicals.
Dunn Building Co. LLC erected a metal building system and built the lean-to building, which spans 2,555 m2 (27,500 sf) total.
The company also installed a standing seam roof system in Galvalume and ribbed metal wall panels in Cool Cotton White. The roof and walls are insulated with blanket fibreglass insulation that is rated R-19 for thermal resistance.
The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) North Alabama chapter recognized the design-build project with its Award of Excellence, and Varco Pruden Buildings inducted it into its Varco Pruden Hall of Fame.
