The Metal Construction Association held its annual Winter Meeting at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego from January 22-24. Here’s a recap of some of what happened at this year’s meeting:
New Board Members
MCA elected two new board members–Dave Durham and J.B. Wissman. Durham is the Construction Marketing Manager at Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel, and has been active in the MCA since 2013. Wissman is the co-owner and president of Dimension Metals Inc., Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
2017 Chairman’s Awards
The winners of the 2017 Chairman’s Awards were announced during the Winter Meeting. Eight outstanding building projects from across the country were recognized by the MCA. The winners were selected by a panel of architects, and awarded to MCA member companies. Check out the winners here.
2017 Patrick R. Bush Award Winner
Scott Moffatt from PPG Industries Inc. was named the MCA’s 2017 Patrick R. Bush Award winner. The award recognizes one individual from a member company who has recently made significant volunteer contributions to MCA. Moffatt is PPG market manager, architectural coil and extrusion coatings, and has been involved in the MCA for 10 years, including serving as a board member for both the association at-large and the Metal Roofing Alliance and chairman of the program committee. Changing of the Guard
After two years as Chairman, Dale Nelson from Roof Hugger stepped down and was succeeded by Ed Karper from Dura Coat Products as the new MCA Chair. The remaining executive committee is Vice Chair: James Bush, ATAS International; Past Chair: Dale Nelson; Brian Partyka, Drexel Metals Inc.; Secretary: Bob Zabcik, MBCI; MRA President: Dick Bus, ATAS International; Market Development Chair: Dave Durham, U.S. Steel Corp.; and Technical Committee Chair: David Stermer, Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.
The Directors are: Randy Allen, Triangle Fastener Corp.; Brett Barber, Bradbury Co. Committee Updates
Each of the committees met at the Winter Meeting and provided updates of what they are working on. Here are some highlights:
- The Portable Rollformer Best Practice Manual is currently in its five-year review. Comments have been received, and are being worked into an updated document.
- The MCA’s code change proposals for the 2021 International Building Code have been submitted.
- MCA has submitted a proposal requiring NFPA 285 for any MCM application above 40 feet; eliminating Section 1406.11.
- MCA also submitted a proposal requiring MCM laminate materials with an aluminum core to be subject to NFPA 285 also.
- The MCM System White Paper has been approved by the Council and will be sent to the Board.
- The initial review of the MCA Diaphragm Design Primer is complete. Updates have been made and a draft is now available on the website.
- Work is being done on a technical bulletin on Sound Produced by Metal Roofs. Plans have been developed for building a test apparatus at the MBCI test facility.
- The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) refresh is currently taking place with a review of the existing LCA and EPD documents.
- Results to date on a new round of testing for the Discontinuous Metal Roof study being conducted at PRI have been encouraging.
- The IMP Selection Guide and the Visual Acceptance Guide are now available online.
New Members
In 2017, the MCA added a number of new companies to its ranks. Hopkins, Minn.-based Edco Products; Fulton, Miss.-based Exterior Systems, a division of F.L. Crane & Sons; Roswell, Ga.-based Kloeckner Metals; Mundelein, Ill.-based Sheet Metal Supply Ltd.; and Riverview, Mich.-based William Molnar Roofing Co. Inc. joined the association’s 92 member companies.
