Ferry Terminal Building, Ocean Beach, New York

To replace a ferry terminal building, damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, LK McLean Associates PC designed a new one with a standing seam roof that is resistant to flooding and storm and wind damage.

The ferry terminal houses the Village of Ocean Beach Police Department, meeting rooms and restrooms. Challenges of the project included working in a restricted footprint and incorporating code requirements that were, at times, at odds. For example, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) required the building to be raised. At the same time, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) required ADA access throughout the building and site.

To complete the project, Schnabel’s Roofing of Long Island Inc. installed ATAS International Inc.’s 0.04-inch-thick aluminum Dutch Seam roof panels in 70 percent PVDF Patina Green. The panels are embossed and have stiffening ribs.

Ocean Beach is a tourist destination on Fire Island, a 32-mile-long barrier island parallel to Long Island. It is primarily accessible via ferry service.
