Stonehill and Taylor Architects PC designed Moxy NYC Chelsea hotel to be an iconic building and congruous with the industrial-modern style in its neighborhood. The firm specified weathered steel in classic cast iron shapes for the façade. However, there were concerns about weight and dripping on glass if the Corten at slab edge details continued as the building ascents past its triple-height podium up the rest of the 33 stories. Instead of Corten, aluminum slab edge details in a finish that mimics Corten steel were used to resolve the concerns.
Walsh Glass and Metal Inc. installed 15,000 square feet of Pure + FreeForm’s 2-mm aluminum in a custom break shape slab edge profile on the façade. The aluminum is finished in Nomad Steel finish, which matches Corten steel at the podium of the building.
