Located on the campus of the Adena Regional Medical Center, the new facility houses the Wright State Miami Valley College School of Nursing. To create a pleasing aesthetic upon entering the building, the design team looked for a way to add warmth to the spacious lobby area while still staying within budget. An eye-catching medley of suspended metal ceiling clouds from Armstrong Ceiling Systems impart the rich, upscale look of real wood at a more affordable cost.
“We felt the metal wood-look ceilings would create the same aesthetic and bring the same warmth to the space as real wood ceilings, and they have,” said interior designer Alana Haslow. “Because of the height at which the metal ceilings are installed, it’s virtually impossible to tell the difference between metal and real wood ceilings.”
Armstrong supplied its MetalWorks Effects Wood Looks ceiling system in Maple, made with 0.21-inch- (5-mm-) thick electrogalvanized steel. The 2- by 2-foot (0.6- by 0.6-m) ceiling panels were installed in a standard T-bar suspension ceiling system and feature a realistic maple finish that is embedded onto the metal ceiling panels, eliminating any problems associated with delamination. The panels also feature a patented edge detail that minimizes the visibility of the grid system.
In addition, the metal ceiling panels are extra microperforated to provide acoustic control within the space. Measuring only 0.03-inch (0.7-mm) in diameter, the perforations are practically invisible. When used with an acoustical fleece backing, they allow the panels to achieve a Noise Reduction Coefficient of 0.65, meaning they absorb 65 percent of the sound that strikes them.
