Specialty Steel Industry of North America Releases market data for May 2011

The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (“SSINA”) has released statistical data on imports, U.S. consumption, and import penetration for YTD May 2011. The data represents U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for May 2011 compared to the same 2010 five month period.

The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:

 

  • Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 173,382 tons, a 23.4% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 717,229 tons, a 33.6% increase; five month import penetration was 24.2%, a 2.0 percentage point decrease from 2010.

 

  • Stainless steel plate: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 68,808 tons, a 144.2% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 147,819 tons, a 47.9% increase; five month import penetration was 46.5%, an 18.3 percentage point increase from 2010.

 

  • Stainless steel bar: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 60,583 tons, a 53.5% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 114,034 tons, a 36.7% increase; five month import penetration was 53.1%, a 5.8 percentage point increase from 2010.

 

  • Stainless steel rod: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 12,881 tons, a 27.5% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 34,217 tons, a 33.6% increase; five month import penetration was 37.6%, a 1.9 percentage point decrease from 2010.

 

  • Stainless steel wire: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 19,934 tons, a 13.9% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 23,784 tons, a 4.3% increase; five month import penetration was 83.8%, a 7.1 percentage point increase from 2010.

 

Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD May 2011 were 335,588 tons, a 42.4% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was
1,037,083 tons, a 34.9% increase; five month import penetration was 32.4%, a 1.7 percentage point increase from 2010.

 

  • Alloy tool steel: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 44,797 tons, a 60.8% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
  • Electrical steel: Imports in YTD May 2011 were 47,231 tons, a 24.2% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 64,494 tons, a 28.7% decrease from YTD May 2010; five month import penetration was 73.2%, a 31.1 percentage point increase from 2010.

Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD May 2011 were
427,616 tons, a 41.8% increase compared to YTD May 2010; U.S. consumption was 1,126,973 tons, a 28.5% increase; five month import penetration was 37.9%, a 3.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
