To replace Brantford Gymnastics Academy’s facility damaged by an electrical fire in November 2016, design-builder Lanca Contracting Ltd. designed and constructed a metal building system supplied by Robertson Building Systems.
The building has a metal roof and metal walls. For the roof, Lanca installed Metl-Span’s Double-Lok standing seam roof system in Galvalume Plus. To comply with property line boundary requirements, one of the exterior walls on the building is clad in Metl-Span’s ThermalSafe 4-inch insulated metal panels (IMPs), which have a one-hour fire rating. Lanca clad the balance of the exterior walls with Metl-Span’s 4-inch Tuff Wall IMPs. Those panels have a stucco-like appearance on the exterior and lightly corrugated Mesa profile on the interior. For trim and downspouts, Lanca used Robertson’s metal material in Red.

First, while ThermalSafe panels are fire resistant, they also provide good thermal performance and reduce sound transmission. We also used Tuff Wall as it is an attractive metal panel that exhibits the natural beauty sought by many owners and designers. In designing the building, we knew it was important to match the professionalism that many people associate with Brantford Gymnastics Academy. What’s more, the stucco-like coating of Tuff Wall is a perfect solution for BGA as it is extremely durable, impact- and abrasion-resistant. What this results in is nearly zero maintenance in the long run while still enjoying the benefits of an IMP urethane core and energy efficiency. Who says that beauty and functionality have to be mutually exclusive?”
In addition to the metal panels, the building has approximately 5,000 square feet of glass on the exterior, which provides abundant daylighting on two Olympic-sized floors. To minimize air pollution in the gymnasium and minimize humidity and dust/chalk concentration, an HVAC return air system was installed.
Brantford Gymnastics Academy is a national club and training gymnasium that has been used by national medalists, provincial medalists and provincial champions. The 13,000-square-foot building has a 3,000-square-foot office and administration area, colorful party room, and glass-encased viewing area on a mezzanine that overlooks the floor. The project was completed in November 2017.
