George M. Smart Athletic Center, Defiance College, Defiance, Ohio

Student athletes are racing around a 21st century sports center constructed with metal products. Mel Lanzer Co., Napoleon, Ohio, utilized a building system, and metal roof and wall panels supplied by American Buidlings Co. to construct Defiance College's George M. Smart Athletic Center, which was completed in December 2011.

American Buildings supplied its Clear Span and Rigid Frame building system, standing seam roof system and its 26-gauge reverse rib ALTC wall panels for the 85,000-square-foot building.

The exterior of the center features a variedheight brick wainscot, reverse-rib steel siding, translucent light panels, EIFS coating and several solar panels to help offset energy consumption.

The 340- by 200-foot athletic facility contains an eight-lane, National Collegiate Athletic Association regulation 200-meter running track, pole vault pit, high jump area and shot put circle.

The building can be transformed into three basketball courts with retractable backboards or into four tennis courts. The lean-to portion of the building, which is 50 by 340 feet, contains a lobby, fitness center, weight room, locker room and offices.
