Perkins + Will designed the exterior of Summit Arena at The Monument to complement and reflect the surrounding Black Hills area. Insulated metal panels (IMPs) and metal composite material (MCM) panels were specified for durability, design flexibility and the ability to integrate them with glazing and other cladding systems.

On the majority of the exterior, MG McGrath Inc. fabricated and installed CENTRIA’s Formawall IMPs in four colors: Sienna, Sedona, Clay and Midnight Bronze.

MG McGrath also fabricated and installed CENTRIA’s 22-gauge steel Concept Series CS-260 single-skin, concealed fastener, corrugated metal wall panels in a three-coat metallic finish.

The Sienna, Sedona and Clay panels are all mixed together in a pattern on the façade. The Midnight Bronze panels create banding at the top of the arena above IMPs. There are also Midnight Bronze panels above entrances.

MCM panels were used for trim pieces that wrap around facia, down soffits and, inside and on the southwest side the building, at a vestibule. MG McGrath fabricated and installed Arconic Architectural Products LLC’s 4-mm-thick Reynobond MCM with a fire resistant (FR) core in a custom metallic finish.

Additionally, MG McGrath fabricated and installed Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope’s Reliance Window Wall system with Vitro Architectural Glass’ Solarban 60 heat-strengthened glass.

The 250,000-square-foot Summit Arena at The Monument has 12,500 seats and is used for events including basketball, soccer, hockey, rodeos, concerts, plays, conventions and civic gatherings.

Summit Arena at The Monument replaced and expanded Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena and is located on the west side of Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. It is named for Monument Health.
