A project goal for Banner Estrella Medical Center was to expand the facility, move away from copper as a primary element and maintain a cohesive aesthetic. The existing facility was skinned in a flat copper panel, precast concrete and accented with a ribbed, zinc-colored wall panel. The 460,000-square-foot expansion project included three buildings: a patient tower and two parking garages.
Morin Corp., a Kingspan Group company, supplied 35,000 square feet of its 22-gauge Matrix Series U12 vertical metal wall panel in Weathered Zinc and 13,250 square feet of its 22-gague U12 Perforated Panel pre-finished vertical metal wall panel in Weathered Zinc. The perforation of the panels on the building is 3/4-inch holes on 1-inch stagger with a 51 percent open area; the perforation of the panels on the garages is 3/8-inch holes on 1/2-inch stagger with a 51 percent open area.
Morin’s panels were specified as the primary skin material because they created a transition into the existing ribbed panels and were more cost effective than copper. The panels continued the look of the ribbed panel, provided shading to the east and west facing glass and allowed views out of the large patient room windows. Morin’s ribbed and perforated panels clad a window shading scrim.
Kovach Inc. fabricated 20-ounce copper into its Flush Panel System with a 1/2-inch reveal; panels are 1-inch deep by 12 inches wide. Additionally, small amounts of copper were installed at entry points into the facility, designed as a wayfinding element.
The expansion included a new seven-level tower, more space for women and infant services and diagnostic and treatment areas. In all, 180,000 square feet of existing spaces were renovated. The
$150 million project was completed in October 2013.
