Prominently featured in a corner lot infill project, an expansive curtainwall spans three levels of a private residence in a low- to mid-rise urban neighborhood. The residence is in the Astoria neighborhood of the Queens borough, and the curtainwall provides residents views of the East River, Hell Gate Bridge and Triborough Bridge.
The 28-foot-tall, 25-foot-wide curtainwall is constructed with aluminum framing and column covers, spandrel panels, and metal fascia on its rooftop canopy and balconies. Sliding doors provide egress.
For the curtainwall framing, Mike the Glazier, installer for the project, utilized Gamco Corp.’s CW250 2 1/2-inch aluminum with 2 1/2-inch by 3 7/8-inch back member profiles and 1-inch glazing pockets. The column covers are three stories tall and clad vertical structural steel columns. Gamco fabricated them with 1/8-inch-thick aluminum. Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope and Tempco Glass Fabrication LLC fabricated insulated glazing units (IGUs) with Vitro Architectural Glass’ SB70 glass for the project.
Gamco also supplied its spandrel panels for the curtainwall and metal fascia panels for the canopy and balconies. The exposed curtainwall framing, column covers and metal claddings are finished in RAL 8014 matte Sepia Brown, a custom color to match the residence’s wood siding and soffits.
To secure curtainwall framing to structural steel columns and beams, Mike the Glazier used angle and strap anchors. For a perimeter interface between the curtainwall, building structure and sliding doors, Mike the Glazier used Gamco’s 25002 End Cap System.
To provide each level access to balconies and an outdoor raised patio, Mike the Glazier installed three of Crystal Window and Door Systems Ltd.’s two-panel, aluminum sliding doors.
