Combine superior performance and high-end design flexibility
A few months ago, I began working with a new vendor who was unfamiliar with insulated metal panels (IMPs). In our first meeting I was asked, “Are insulated panels really the next thing in building technology or are they just a trend?” Those of us in this tight-knit metal building community would do well to honestly evaluate this question. My confidence in our industry comes from knowing we’ve only really just scratched the surface of what IMPs can do.
Recent engineering advances have allowed metal buildings to move beyond expectations. Universal barrier wall systems like Deland, Fla.-based Kingspan Insulated Panels North America’s KarrierPanel System are dismantling stereotypes by providing a cost-effective alternative solution to traditional multi-component wall assemblies. Barrier wall systems deliver the same speed of build and performance benefits of IMPs while supporting the aesthetic of almost any façade system including brick, aluminum composite material (ACM), ceramic tile, porcelain stone or even custom-designed extruded aluminum plank.
New Take on an Old Standard
Barrier wall systems begin with high performing, 42-inch-wide IMPs in standard profiles that provide maximum coverage and fast installation. IMPs replace components like interior gypsum, vapor retarders and insulation all in one. Panels can be installed horizontally or vertically depending on framing requirements and the specified rainscreen system. Because the panels won’t be seen after the rainscreen is installed, cost-effective colors and finishes can be used on both the interior and exterior skins.
Rainscreen integration is possible through utilizing a fully engineered 16-gauge Galvalume rail that fits inside the panel joint. This stable and secure structural rail safely transmits positive loads from a variety of rainscreens to the structure supports behind the insulated panels. Through fasteners secure the exposed rail edge, ensuring that the system will safely handle negative loads as well. The rail is integrated into the joint during normal panel installation, and is secured using standard panel fasteners in a one-step process while not penetrating the air, water or vapor barrier.
Expanding Your Reach
One of the biggest selling points of IMPs has always been the increased speed of build due to minimized delays from coordinating multiple trades. Universal barrier wall systems take that to another level. Installers who once only specialized in metal buildings can now increase their scope of work by advocating for barrier wall systems to general contracts, architects and even building developers or owners.
Dan Hooper, president, Universal Wall Systems, Grand Rapids, Mich., has had great success using barrier wall systems. “The single-source responsibility of installing a barrier wall system and façade is a positive thing,” he says. “Systems like [barrier wall] allow for the opportunity to take advantage of something others can’t do and to ensure the project is done right from the structural supports through completion of the façade.” Panel manufacturers aid this by strategically partnering with reputable façade providers to deliver tested systems, thorough product and installation training, and system component order management. In addition, because barrier wall systems are provided by a single source, warranties are combined, giving building owners peace of mind.
An expansion of the historic Ford Rouge Center in Dearborn, Mich., was recently completed using almost 21,000 square feet of an IMP barrier wall system plus thin brick façade. These components perfectly combined the classic look of the original 1928 design with modern, energy-efficient, high-performance insulated panel technology. “The Thin Brick Façade System was developed and engineered to offer a real alternative to traditional brick by increasing the speed, efficiency and simplicity of the installation,” says Sam Messerly, BENCHMARK by Kingspan façade product manager.
“This system allows design professionals to use a brick rainscreen cladding system completely engineered from a single-source supplier all while offering the look and design they want.” Additionally, there’s a modern design trend of accenting traditional style buildings with metal. This look can easily be accomplished by integrating universal barrier wall plus façade systems with other insulated metal panel profiles, combining superior thermal performance with unique design, all delivered by a single-source provider and installer.
